The ‘Belle-Ile en Liège’ project falls under the scope of the policy concerning the economic reallocation of disused former industrial sites recommended by the Walloon Region.

The first stage of this reallocation consisted of building the Belle-Ile shopping centre, which houses a Carrefour hypermarket and 98 shops. To ensure good business synergy, the Zénobe Gramme business park, with its 15 buildings equipped with all the mod cons, was subsequently developed alongside the shopping centre.

Since the whole complex is situated on a peninsula between the Ourthe and the Ourthe Canal, a bridge was built over the Ourthe to ensure excellent accessibility. Footpaths have been added along the water in an effort to retain the site’s bucolic character and highlight the 100-year-old plane trees.

The success of the Belle-Ile shopping centre can be attributed to its dynamism and its integration into the landscape. The architectural works, entrusted to Atelier du Sart-Tilman, are of a very high quality.

As well as the economic dynamism generated for the city of Liège, the Belle-Ile site has helped to bring new life to the surrounding neighbourhoods.
